How To Sanitize, Collect and Submit
Samples
*** PLEASE USE A 100 ml PLASTIC STERILE BOTTLE
FROM OUR LAB ***
* SELECTING A TAP:
A Holding tank faucet is preferred. Petcock or small
valve is acceptable.
DO NOT sample from hoses or drinking
fountains.
Avoid taps with leaks at faucet or stem.
Avoid taps with SWIVEL JOINTS.
The nearest tap to the well is preferred if
you want to check the well for bacteria.
Bathroom sink is better than a swivel
kitchen sink.
* STERILIZE THE FAUCET:
Remove aeration screen from
inside of cold water faucet.
Take a quart plastic bag -
put 2 cups of water and 1 ounce of bleach in
bag. Attach the bag to open end of the faucet.
Use your hand to clamp and seal around the
faucet. Carefully lift up and squeeze the bottom
of the suspended bag 3 X to sanitize the opening
and inside of the faucet.
Remove the bag and empty into
drain - DO NOT touch the faucet opening.
* FLUSH THE TAP:
Turn on Cold
Water fully open as possible.
Let Run 3
Minutes minimum.
* TAKING THE SAMPLE:
Reduce
water flow to pencil width.
Remove
the sealed cap from bottle. DO NOT
touch inside of lid or mouth of bottle.
Do
not rinse bottle out.
Fill
bottle to the line marked 100 ml. Do not
over fill bottle.
Immediatly
recap bottle tightly, and keep the sample cool.
* SUBMITTING SAMPLES:
Label
your bottle with a sample description.
Complete
the Yellow Information Form.
Return
the water sample(s) along with the Sample
Information Form, and Payment to: HOLMES LABORATORY,
